Bryan Duggan (Dublin Institute of Technology - DIT)
Bryan will be detailing the development of Tunepal, a query-by-playing search engine for traditional melodies used by over 30,000 musicians around the world.
The panel will address issues such as "do computational approaches to world music analysis need to be sensitive to the cultural/social aspects of music, or such 'emic' perspectives, which have been until recently the focus of much world music scholarship?" And if so, how? Or is a more formal, or 'etic', approach to computation in world music analysis defensible as well?
